There are a few different types of browsers available and they all do much the same function, display web pages! Below are statistics from one of my major sites. This site has roughly 1 million hits per month and clearly show the most popular browser is Microsoft Internet Explorer.
When designing a site you can keep it basic with static pictures, default fonts and basic HTML coding. This will be a great site for download speed and viewing in almost any browser. Fortunately the internet has come along way since it's beginning and the average surfer is use to animation, interaction, audio, movies, games accessibility wrapped up in a good looking site.
On average the above mentioned "bells & whistles" added into your site are compatible from one browser to another, but NOT ALL!
